I get asked a question quite often that goes something like this:
‘I read that __________ (insert food like Tomatoes, Broccoli, Gluten Free Bread) would be good for me because _____________ (insert reason I read online or heard from a friend) but I really don’t like it, should I eat it anyways?’
My answer is almost always going to be No!
In my opinion, there is no reason to eat food you don’t enjoy! There is so much variety available to most of us, and there’s no reason to eat foods that don’t compel you to eat them.
(I’m talking about a healthy attraction to real food here, not a food craving that drives you to overeat on certain foods. When you’re free of your food cravings, you’ll be able to better trust your attraction to food, as you won’t be drawn to it like a magnet).
My suggestion? Either prepare the food in a way you enjoy or find an alternative.
So What if it Takes Some Butter to Enjoy Your Vegetables?
Take vegetables for an example. Even if you don’t enjoy vegetables, I’m guessing that you’ve had vegetables prepared in a way that you like and enjoy eating, yes? So, if you need a little butter, sea salt or some other condiment on your vegetables to enjoy eating them, then go ahead. The French (generally speaking) seem to do fine with lots of butter added in their diets. In general, they’re eating fresh, real foods and not overeating, so it’s fine. But, that’s a whole other post … more about that later.
We’re Adults Now, We Get to Decide
As kids, we had to eat foods we didn’t like, but we’re adults now, we’re in charge, and there’s no reason to force feed ourselves for nutritional reasons. I believe we get nourished by eating real (otherwise known as healthy) foods that we enjoy.
So, don’t gag down the broccoli if you don’t enjoy it. Or, at least prepare it in a way that makes it delicious for you. But, also don’t be shy about trying new things and trying new recipes if you don’t like it the first time. You may find a new favorite.
