I’m going to share a tip with you today that may sound a little controversial, or that most health experts don’t agree with. Many experts teach that eating 5-6 small meals a day is the way to go for optimal health and weight. With all due respect to the experience and training of those experts, but that is not true for everyone and may not be true for you.
If you’re following the advice of eating gurus and eating healthy snacks like almonds, or vegetables and hummus, etc. and you’re eating low carb and very low sugar and still not losing weight, then this information is for you. Eating healthy and still not seeing results will leave you feeling frustrated and wondering if you should just give up and order a Big Mac or at least a paleo burger with fries and a coconut shake! Before you drive by your fave fast food, read these tips. They might just change your life forever.
Are You Ready?
You may not need to eat 5 meals a day. You may feel a whole lot better if you only eat only 3. I really don’t know what your magic combination of food is within those meals, but I do know that every one of my patients who has adopted eating 3 meals a day, has felt better once their metabolism shifted.
I wish I could tell you exactly what to eat for your 3 meals a day instead of eating 5-6, but you are unique and your nutritional needs are unique. If you don’t have the correct nutrient combinations for you, you might not have the same successes that I did, but I still want you to know about this. You can do your own program with me or another practitioner if you want to know, but that’s not my purpose in sharing. I want you to be empowered.
What I can tell you is eating 3 meals a day of the exact combinations of food my body needed worked for me and allowed me to lose 20 pounds. The 20 pounds I lost also hasn’t returned a year later. I am eating the same food that I did when I was eating 5-6 meals per day, I’m just having that food at different times of the day and in different combinations, combinations that work for my body. In fact, my metabolism has continued to improve and I often have to remind myself to eat. My moods and energy are more even and it feels freeing not to be a slave to food. I’m able to eat a lot more carbs (fruit!) than I could before, and I’m able to leave my house without hauling food around with me. I can’t tell you what a relief it is not having to think about when and where I would eat next to keep my blood sugar up.
So what I didn’t know is what hurt me. It didn’t truly harm me, I just wasn’t living up to my full potential. The frequent meals helped keep my blood sugar up and kept me from crashing, but it also kept my insulin levels up, which blocked fat burning. It also did not help stabilize my energy or mood, not like my current plan does. Now, I burn fat between meals and I never ever crash. When your insulin levels go up after a meal and down between, like when you eat 3 balanced meals per day, it helps every system of your body function better, especially your hormonal system and your brain. Oh, how much better I feel, I can not even tell you. The secret weapon for me was not 5 or 6 meals a day. It was changing the timing and combinations of healthy foods I was already putting into my body. It was a groundbreaking program called Metabolic Balance, which you can learn more about here.
Your Big Take Away
Do your research, consider alternatives to what you’ve been told is the answer. There are other practitioners out there recommending 3 meals a day. I’m not the only one, but there is such a loud message to have 5-6 smaller meals, I feel it’s my duty to share another perspective, especially when I used to give this advice to my patients. I apologize. I have a different perspective now and I’m here to share it with you.
Please consider the idea of not having snacks, but having 3 balanced meals per day with a protein portion, a vegetable portion with fat at least. It could change your life for the better.
