The Importance of Eating Healthy Eggs

The Importance of Eating Healthy Eggs

The Importance of Eating Healthy EggsIf you’ve been a patient of mine and you’re not allergic to eggs, it’s likely I’ve told you about the importance of eating healthy eggs and encouraged you to eat them (If you’re not a patient, that’s ok, keep reading). Most of my patients are surprised when I tell them to eat the egg yolks they’ve been giving to their dogs (lucky dogs!). When I share about the health benefits, many take note and start enjoying eggs again. This is especially brave for those who have problems with high Cholesterol or Triglycerides (due to what their Doctors or the media have told them), but their trust in the laws of nature pay off with their better health.

But, the key point I make is that buying healthy eggs is KEY to receive the health benefits of eggs. I don’t recommend liquid eggs or conventionally raised eggs! Chickens given antibiotics, hormones, non-organic feed, soy and corn are not the kind of eggs you want to be eating. You also need to be careful with the whole cage free labeling. Sometimes cage free means the birds are given access, but don’t live outside as they’ve been raised inside and are afraid to go outside. If you can, buy eggs from hens walking around in the grass and picking and scratching in the dirt. You can taste the difference if you’re lucky enough to eat a healthy egg. In fact, the difference is so startling, you won’t be able to miss it and you’ll likely turn your nose up at them at restaurants.

I recently went to a restaurant and ordered eggs. They were the most flavorless eggs I could remember tasting. Perhaps it was such a contract to the eggs I’ve been buying that I could notice it. It was unmistakable, flat tasting, no flavor, very disappointing.

What’s A Good Egg?

So, what makes a good egg? Well, a chicken who is able to roam in the outdoors, be in the sunshine when it’s sunny, eat worms and bugs, etc. and do things that chickens do naturally. It’s more expensive to buy eggs from chickens who enjoy this lifestyle, but why would you want to eat the offspring of an injured, malnourished, medicated animal? The amount of omega 3 oils in the eggs from these less than fortunate animals is low or non existent, and are full of omega 6 oils, which you likely have too much of already.

Resources for Eggs:

First, an egg scorecard from the Cornicopia Institute, so you can see what you’re paying for and what you’re getting when you buy eggs at the market. Are those uber expensive eggs actually worth it? I found that the eggs we were buying were at the top of the list, and that made me feel better about the money I was spending. It’s even better if you can buy them from a local farm, but when you can’t, these brands can be found in a market near you if you’re lucky.

So, please enjoy your healthy eggs, knowing they are good for you, will not make you fat or increase your cholesterol or clog your arteries. They’re not the culprit, inflammation, most often fueled by unbalanced blood sugar and too many processed carbohydrates is the problem. Eggs are a wonderful and wholesome food capable of sustaining life. Enjoy!
